novelist born in New York City, reared in New Orleans, for seven years resident in Spain, whose novels include A Place Without Twilight (1958) and The Daughters of Necessity (1959), treating families in the South, respectively black and wealthy white; and The Columbus Tree (1972), about Americans in Spain. Tiger Tiger Burning Bright (1963) is his dramatization of his first novel. Strangers and Graves (1966) collects four novellas.
