Quick Reference

A small sailing or rowing vessel of the Mediterranean, used for coastal transport or trading. The larger feluccas were narrow, decked, galley-built vessels, with a lateen rig carried on one or two masts, occasionally also with a small mizzen. Smaller feluccas were propelled with six or eight oars, though some of the smaller sailing feluccas used oars and sail simultaneously. The seagoing type has almost died out, but they are still in use on many eastern Mediterranean rivers, particularly the Nile.
