Quick Reference

A synthetic octapeptide which resembles the pituitary hormone vasopressin. It is a vasoconstrictor which causes vascular smooth muscle to contract. It is included in dental anaesthetic solutions in order to produce constriction of the venous vessels, thus reducing the rate at which the local anaesthetic is carried away by the bloodstream, and thereby extending the duration of the local anaesthetic to produce a deeper and more effective level of anaesthesia. Trade name: Octapressin®.

Subjects: Dentistry.
