Quick Reference

S. of Erc; king of Dál Riata c.495–501; d. 501.

In the mid-490s Fergus and his brothers are said to have migrated from the Dál Riata homeland in Ulster to Kintyre and mid-Argyll, possibly from a desire for more land. The Dál Riatans had already been converted to Christianity by St Patrick, and Fergus Mór (‘the Great’) is accepted as the first historical king of Dál Riata and dynastic founder.
