an important figure in the Irish revival. Among many translations and works based on Gaelic legend, he published a widely praised elegy on Thomas Davis, a nationalist leader, in 1845; Lays of the Western Gael (1865); Congal (1872), an epic on the last stand of Irish paganism against Christianity; and Ogham Inscriptions in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland (1887), his most important antiquarian work.
