The statement that, for all integers *n*>2, the equation *x*^{n}+*y*^{n}=*z*^{n} has no solution in positive integers. Fermat wrote in the margin of a book that he had a proof of this, but as he never repeated the claim it is likely that he realized the incompleteness of his supposed proof. Much research was done over centuries until a proof was completed in 1995 by Andrew * Wiles.
