An oncogene, originally identified in avian and feline sarcomas, for which there is a human homologue located on chromosome 15 that is probably involved in acute promyelocytic leukaemia where there is a translocation between chromosomes 15 and 17. The gene product is a cytoplasmic protein tyrosine kinase involved in downstream signalling from various cytokines involved in haematopoiesis (e.g. IL-3, GM-CSF, and EPO) and has a role in regulating the innate immune response. Mutations in the Fes/Fps kinase have been identified in human colorectal carcinomas.
