Quick Reference

Very fine filaments of silica glass used primarily as a replacement for asbestos as an insulating material because it was believed to be biologically inert, without the dangerous adverse effects of asbestos. However, inhaled fiberglass particles can cause pulmonary fibrosis. Molded fiberglass is used in boat-building, etc., and its carriage in a volatile solvent and “fixer” exposes workers to hazards, notably damage to the cornea unless protective goggles are used.
