A group of cholesterol-lowering drugs effective in lowering triglyceride and, to a lesser extent, in increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. Examples are gemfibrozil and fenofibrate. Fibrates alter the transcription of several genes involved in lipoprotein metabolism and are synthetic ligands for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα).
