fibromodulin

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A member of a family of small proteoglycans that also includes decorin, biglycan, and lumican. The core protein (376 aa) has a central region with multiple repeats of domains of ~25 aa with leucine-rich motifs. There are four keratan sulphate chains attached to N-linked oligosaccharides. Fibromodulin is particularly abundant in articular cartilage, tendon, and ligament where it interacts with type I and type II collagen fibrils. Animals in which the fibromodulin and lumican genes are knocked out exhibit defects similar to Ehlers–Danlos syndrome.
