Quick Reference

A high molecular weight branched polysaccharide used to produce solutions of high viscosity and low osmotic pressures for the density-gradient separation of leucocytes from whole blood. Ficoll-Paque is premixed Ficoll and Hypaque (diatrizoate) with a density greater than that of all blood cells other than lymphocytes (1.077 g/cm3). This allows a one-step centrifugation process for isolating lymphocytes which remain at the plasma–Ficoll-Paque boundary.
