In the individual psychology of the Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler (1870–1937) and his followers, a term used to denote the characteristic form of human motivation, being driven by striving after unattainable ultimate goals. Except in cases of neurosis, however, people are normally able to suspend such fantasies and adopt more realistic judgements of the future.
