1. The transformation of actual happenings into fictional form; to represent real people or events in the manner of fiction and as if they were fictional: as in fictionalizing a biography. See also dramatization.
2. A pejorative term for an overindulgence in dramatic licence.
3. A narrative based partly or wholly on fact but written as if it were fiction. Films and broadcast dramas of this kind often bear the label ‘based on a true story’. See also docudrama; faction.
