The notebooks used ‘in the field’ by surveyors. These working notes and sketches were later converted into maps and plans. Field books form an important part of the Fairbank papers at Sheffield Archives, the best‐preserved collection of surveyors’ records, extending over four generations from the mid‐18th to the mid‐19th century.
