Numerous sequences of numbers associated with different geometrical figures were considered special by the Pythagoreans and other early mathematicians, and these are known loosely as figurate numbers. They include the perfect squares, the triangular numbers and the tetrahedral numbers, and others known as the pentagonal and the hexagonal numbers.
