The collective name given to four isomeric polyene macrolides isolated from cultures of Streptomyces filipinensis. Filipin binds to cholesterol in membranes and the complexes can be visualized by freeze-fracture and electron microscopy. The filipin–cholesterol complexes produce pores and cause cytolysis.
