Single-stranded RNA viruses, Marburg and Ebola viruses being the only two known genera in the family. Morphologically they are long filaments (up to 14 mm, 70 nm thick), sometimes branched, with the RNA surrounded by a cell-derived envelope. Infection causes major haemorrhagic complications with activation of the blood clotting cascade, and is frequently fatal.
