Bp. of Caesarea in Cappadocia from c.230. He supported St Cyprian against Pope Stephen I in holding that Baptism could be validly performed only within the Church and that heretics must therefore be ‘rebaptized’. He presided over the first of the synods of Antioch held to consider the case of Paul of Samosata. Feast day in the E., 28 Oct.
