Quick Reference

The highest classification of a bachelor's degree, the others being an upper second (2.1), lower second (2.2), and third class. Possession of a first class degree has traditionally been one of the prerequisites for progression to postgraduate‐level study, although 2.1s are now also widely accepted for this purpose. Published figures are open to the interpretation that a first class degree may be more readily attainable at some institutions and in some subjects than others, based on a comparison between candidates' General Certificate of Education Advanced Level scores and subsequent degree classification attained.
