(1890–1960). From 1944 he was first professor of general linguistics in Britain. Firth was distinguished from other theorists of his generation by his insistence that language should be studied as part of a social process. His “Prosodic Analysis” was postulated on the interdependence of phonology and grammar and is a prelude to much more recent developments.
