Succeeded Schnabel on staff of Berlin High Sch. for Mus. from 1931. In 1932 formed chamber orch., directing it from the kbd. in concs. (one of first to revive this 18th cent. practice). Salzburg Fest. début 1938. Specialist in, and writer about, mus. of Bach. whose kbd. works he ed. Comp. of pf. works. Also wrote book on Beethoven's sonatas (1956, Eng. trans. 1959).
