German architect. He settled in Munich in 1796, where he designed the Prinz-Karl-Palais (1803–6), the first great Neo-Classical building in the Bavarian capital, with a fine portico. He contributed to the considerable improvements in the planning of the city under King Maximilian I Joseph (1806–25), including the Karolinenplatz (1808–12), and the Hoftheater (Court Theatre, 1810–18—destroyed 1823 and rebuilt by von Klenze, who retained parts of the exterior, then destroyed again in the 1939–45 war, and rebuilt as the Nationaltheater).
