1 A collective term used to describe the fishing vessels owned by one individual or firm, or operating out of one port. It is also sometimes used, more loosely, to describe all the fishing vessels of one nation. Another use is to describe the fishing vessels of one type, e.g. the trawler fleet.
2 A term used in the British Navy during the years when fleets and squadrons were maintained on foreign stations, to describe the unmarried girls who, often with their families, stayed at these stations in the hope of finding an eligible young officer to marry.
