Quick Reference

Fish oils contain long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids which are protective against heart disease and stroke. The two main fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; C20:5 ω3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid; C22:6 ω3). Fish oil concentrates containing these fatty acids are sold as pharmaceutical preparations. See also cod liver oil; halibut liver oil; menhaden.
