(b Dynaburg, Latvia, 1879; d Katowice, 1953). Polish conductor, violinist, and composer. With Szymanowski and others, founded ‘Young Poland’ group of composers in Berlin 1905. Cond. Warsaw PO 1907 (having been its leader); Vienna Opera 1911–14; Petrograd and Moscow 1914–20. Returned to Warsaw PO 1923–34. Founder and cond. Polish Radio SO 1934–9 and from 1947. Comp. 2 syms. (1903, 1906), vn. conc. (1901), sym.-poem, vn. sonata, etc.
