(1747–76) chaplain in the New Jersey militia for the few months before his death from dysentery, during which he visited field hospitals. Fithian, born in Greenwich, New Jersey, is better known for his journal and letters, written when he was acting as a tutor in a Virginia home (1773–74) and which present an insightful picture of the Virginia aristocracy on the eve of the Revolutionary War.
