after graduation from Harvard became a writer for Time (1936–49) and a professor of creative writing, after 1965 at Harvard. In addition to his own poetry collected in A Wreath for the Sea (1943), In the Rose of Time (1956), and Spring Shade (1971), he translated the Odyssey (1961), for which he received a Bollingen Prize, the Iliad (1974), and, with Dudley Fitts, plays of Sophocles and Euripides. Enlarging the Change (1984) is a book on literary criticism.
