According to the Quran, the original state in which humans are created by God. In the Quran, God is called Fatir, that is, creator of heaven and earth, and the verb fatara is also used to mean “to create.” However, the commonly accepted meaning of the word derives from the traditions of Muhammad, according to which God creates children according to fitra, and their parents later make them Jews or Christians. As such, every child is born a Muslim. The concept of fitra was commonly invoked by Sufis, who often viewed their own quest as the means for restoring the original harmony of creation.
