A protein (5-lipoxygenase activating protein, 161 aa) that is necessary for the activity of 5-lipoxygenase (EC the enzyme responsible for the production of 5-HPETE from arachidonic acid, and leukotriene A4 from 5-HPETE. An Icelandic study suggested that a 4-SNP haplotype in the gene conferred an approximate doubling of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, although this has not held up in larger studies.
