Amer. pianist and conductor. Début at age 7. Appeared in S. Francisco 1942; NY 1944 (cond. Monteux). First prize Brussels Queen Elisabeth competition 1952. Career as pianist halted by illness 1964 which affected his right hand, but quickly took up repertory for left hand. Début as cond., NY 1970. Assoc. cond. Baltimore SO 1973–7, cond. 1977–8; art. dir. Tanglewood Mus. Center 1985.
