A long, narrow deep muscle in the posterior compartment of the lower leg. It has its origin on the posterior surface of the tibia, and its insertion tendon runs along the medial malleolus and splits into four parts to insert onto the distal phalanges of the second to fifth toes. Its primary actions are plantar flexion, inversion, and toe flexion.
