flight of colours

Quick Reference

The sequence of afterimages of different colours that follow brief exposure to a bright stimulus, especially in dark-adapted eyes. It can be demonstrated by adapting one's eyes in the dark for 25 minutes, then switching on a light, fixating it with a steady gaze for several seconds, turning the light off, and keeping the eyes as steady as possible—the phenomenon tends to vanish when the eyes are moved. US flight of colors. Also called colour flight or color flight.
