The common name for trifluoromethane, CF3H (a hydrofluorocarbon, HFC-23), which has recently been found to be a potent greenhouse gas, with an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 260 years. It is a waste by-product of the manufacture of the hydrofluorocarbon HFC-22, which is itself being used as a replacement for certain ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons.
