Quick Reference

The dilation of blood vessels in response to increased flow. Commonly measured by temporary occlusion of flow in the brachial artery using a cuff and then quantifying the flow rate following release using noninvasive Doppler imaging. Dilation is mediated by endothelium-derived relaxing factor and is a response to short-term increases in local shear stress; reduced responsiveness is considered an early indicator of atherogenesis.
