A general term for prepared, prepackaged food items, e.g., dehydrated soup packets, cold meat cuts, potted spreads and salads, tinned fruit, ice cream, etc. They are often hygienically prepared in a factory, and by law in many jurisdictions they are required to list all ingredients, including food additives, preservatives, and sometimes calorific content. Their nutritional value varies but is generally good to adequate. See also fast food, junk food.
