food irradiation

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A method to prevent or retard deterioration of food caused by fungus infection or bacterial decomposition, by exposing it to a short burst of ionized radiation, such as may be produced in a nuclear power plant. This is a highly effective method of food preservation, but it is regarded with suspicion by many consumers because of a mistaken belief that the food continues to emit harmful ionizing radiation long after it has been treated.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
