Quick Reference

(b Bagnolo, nr. Brescia, 1427/30; d Brescia, 1515/16).

Italian painter, the leading figure in Lombard painting until the arrival of Leonardo da Vinci in Milan in 1481/2. He was born near Brescia and worked a good deal in the city, but his main places of activity at the height of his career were Pavia and Milan. According to Vasari he trained in Padua, and his robust style owed much to Mantegna, not least in his interest in perspective. His major works include frescos in S. Eustorgio, Milan, and S. Maria del Carmine, Brescia.
