(1838–1900), elder brother of ‘Alexander’ Forbes and one of the best-known British war correspondents of the Victorian period, made an extensive and lucrative tour of Australia in 1883, lecturing to capacity audiences on the various campaigns he had witnessed. His book Souvenirs of Some Continents (1885) contains an observant account of ‘Social Australia’ and a moving essay on his ‘poor gifted shipwrecked brother’ (‘A Poet Waif’).
