Quick Reference

A short wooden spar lashed to the mast and used to boom out the luff of a lugsail. It was chiefly used in small French and English fishing craft from about the middle of the 19th century, being probably an importation from a similar spar sometimes used in North American waters.

The foregirt may have been a late descendant of the early Norwegian beitass, a luff spar used in Viking ships, particularly the knarr.
