(Janáček: The Cunning Little Vixen). Bass‐bar. Otherwise called the Gamekeeper. He walks through the forest each day, and often stops for a sleep on his way home, happily telling his wife he's been delayed by work. He captures the Vixen and takes her home as a pet, but she escapes back to the forest. He and his friend the Schoolmaster play cards and tease each other—he teases the Schoolmaster about his slowness in courting his girlfriend, the Schoolmaster teases him about the Vixen's escape. It is by following the Forester through the seasons that the story unfolds. The most notable singer of this part in recent years has been Thomas Allen. Created (1924) by Arnold Flögl.
