One of the classes of linguistic universals, consisting of the abstract rules that govern the grammars of languages, such as the transformational rules that all languages appear to have for converting a statement such as This job is easy into a question such as Is this job easy? In this case the transformational rule is simply to move the verb to the beginning of the sentence. See also transformational grammar, universal grammar.
