A peak in the spectrum of frequencies of a specific speech sound, analogous to the fundamental frequency or one of the overtones of a musical tone, which helps to give the speech sound its distinctive sound quality or timbre. For example, in a typical female voice, the first two formants F1 and F2 of the schwa vowel in the word bird or fern are about 650 hertz and 1,593 hertz; in a typical male voice F1 is about 513 hertz and F2 about 1,377 hertz.
