Quick Reference

Group of Italian artists, founded in Rome in 1947, who declared themselves both ‘formalists and Marxists’ in opposition to the members of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, who advocated an art with a more human content. Forma represented an early foray into abstraction for Italian artists: two of the members, Pietro Consagra and Giulio Turcato, founded a monthly journal entitled Forma 1, which in April 1947 published a manifesto of abstract art. Consagra, Turcato, and several other members of the group went on to join Continuità.
