This French organization was founded as a direct by‐product of the 1949 Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) exhibition in Paris on the theme Formes Utiles, Objets de Notre Temps. It continued to debate the role of functionalism in design in the 1950s, seeing ‘useful forms’ as those which struck a precise balance between their function, structure, and meaning. After gaining its independence from UAM in 1950 Formes Utiles mounted annual exhibitions at the Salon des Arts Ménagers until 1987. It also published its magazine Formes utiles.
