Quick Reference

A chemical compound containing 35% cresol and 19% formalin in aqueous glycerine. It has been used to fix and disinfect pulp tissue during a pulpotomy procedure for primary teeth; however, serious concerns have been raised over the potential toxicity and cariogenicity of formalin and its possible blood-borne spread to distant sites. Its use in pulpotomies has now been largely replaced by alternative materials such as ferric sulphate or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).
