The process of reading and processing the contents of a form. forms on a Web page are normally sent to a server where a program written for the Common Gateway Interface reads the data in the form and carries out an action such as querying or updating a database. Sometimes, when a form is implemented using applets or a scripting language, all or some of the processing can occur at the client. See also back end process.
