The census form completed by primary, middle, and secondary schools operating under local authority control, which has given its name to school census returns. The Education Act 1996 required governing bodies of all local authority maintained schools (and the executives of independent schools) to provide information on the school as required by the Secretary of State for Education. Data from this census were used in the calculation and allocation of funding for schools. The final such census was conducted by the Department for Education and Employment in 2001, after which it was replaced by the Pupil Level Annual Schools Census (PLASC), most of the data for which is generated from schools' management information systems. The name ‘form 7’, however, is still commonly used as a generic term for the current annual census.
