Quick Reference

The area of ancient Rome bounded by the Capitol, Palatine, and Aventine hills, near Tiber island, named after the city's cattle market (See markets). Its importance as a commercial and port area from an early date is reflected both by the 8th‐cent. bc Greek pottery found here, and the presence of cults with Greek (and Phoenician) associations such as that of Hercules at the Ara Maxima.
