A whipping movement. It has various applications, the most popularly known being the virtuoso fouetté rond de jambe en tournant en dehors, in which the dancer throws the working leg out to the side and whips the foot in as she turns. The 32 fouetté turns performed in the coda of the Act III pas de deux of Swan Lake (first executed by Legnani) are one of the most famous challenges in the classical ballerina's repertory.
