Quick Reference

A school which has ownership over its own premises. Foundation status became an option for schools from 2001. For some schools it presented an alternative route to some degree of independence from local authority control at a time when grant maintained status became discontinued since it enables schools to operate with a high degree of autonomy in the implementation of admissions procedures and the recruitment and appointment of teaching staff.
